ATV SEARCH & RESCUE COURSE

Hocking College, in Nelsonville, Ohio, will conduct an ATV Search and Rescue Course July 13-15, 2001.  The college’s School of Public Safety Services announces this training, focused on search theory and practices, emphasizing employment of ATV resources as search and rescue tools.

The ClassCourse participants include members of Sheriff’s Departments, Police Departments, Fire/Rescue Departments, Emergency Medical Teams, Correctional Institution Search Teams, and Search & Rescue Teams, as well as Rangers, Wildlife Officers, and Metro Parks Officers. Hatfield-McCoy Trail Search & Rescue Team members have enrolled for this course.

Pre Ride InspectionTopics covered include:  What is Search?, Search & Rescue Operations, Standard Operating Guidelines (SOG), Incident Command System (ICS), Navigation, Tracking, ATV Safety, ATV Tactics, Equipment Lists,  Working with other Search & Rescue Resources, as well as practical exercises on Navigation,  Tracking, and a simulated Search & Rescue Mission Exercise.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own or Department ATVs; however, individuals may participate in the hands-on training program without an ATV if a machine is unavailable.

Tracking ClassStudents must provide evidence of completion of the ATV Safety Institute Rider’s Course.  For the convenience of those who have not attended, a special course will be offered on campus Thursday, July 12, taught by major ATV manufacturer Training Administrator Tosh Konya (contact Course Coordinator for time and fee).

Instructors Craig Bannerman, Mike Goodson, and Steve Jones  carry National Search & Rescue Association technician certification, with extensive field operational experience.

Course Dates & Time:
July 13-15, 2001 - 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. (plus night exercise)

Course Location:
Hocking College, School of Public Safety Services (Bldg 208), Nelsonville, OH. With coordination, free camping with water and electric hookup is available; locker room access is available for tent campers.  A nearby Ramada Inn ((740) 753-3531) offers a corporate rate to attendees.

Course Fee:
$275, payable by cash, check, Departmental purchase order, or VISA/MasterCard.
