Don Amador from the Blue Ribbon Coalition (BRC)
contacted us to inform our readers of a potential
Off-Road Vehicle Area being closed in Lavon
Lake, TX. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)
is considering a permanent closure of the Off-Road
Vehicle (ORV) Area at Lavon Lake, TX
History of the area:
"The existing ORV area was opened in the
mid 1970's. It is located
(map of area; lake map) in an old borrow
area where soil was taken for use in the construction
of the Lavon Dam. The riding area consists of
approximately 70 acres, which includes a small
gravel parking lot. When this area was originally
opened to off-road vehicle use, there were very
few residential homes in close proximity to
the area."
The Army Corp is undergoing what is called "public
scoping" for what will be a future document
called an Environmental Assessment which they
must do before they close or convert the riding
area.
Don will help develop comments letters to be
sent to the Army Corp of Engineers. However,
if you wish to get started early in your fight
to keep this ORV riding open, we encourage you
to do so.
Don encourages those to comments about the ORV
area and why it shouldn’t be closed down.
He also says to talk about the lack of public
land/riding areas and that the city should look
to private lands for expansion. If there
are other areas that need to be addressed include
those in your comments as those are vital to
the success of keeping this ORV area open to
riding.
Comments should be written out and sent to:
Mr. Lee Hunt, Lavon Lake Manager
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
3375 Skyview Drive
Wylie, TX 75098
