MP Racings Alice Buhr (Pronounced Boo-er)
More then just another Pretty Face
I have trained many apprentices over the years
(says Dave Moore Founder of
MP Racing [MP Racing
link no longer funcational]) some very good and some who couldn’t
machine there way out of a wet paper sack, but
Alice is the true “Full Meal Deal” She tig welds,
runs a lathe, milling machine,
R&D a motor, rides her bike (black-lite)
for a quicker time then I ever got out of it,
and is 100% all about MP Racing.
In this interview with Alice, the ATV Source
team wanted to find out how this Country-loving
Farm Girl came to become half owner and new
driving force behind MP Racing.
ATVSource:
How long have you been interested in machines
and what it takes to get more out of them?
ALICE: How
long, hmmm, since I could walk. Growing up on
the farm I was driving tractors when I was 6
years old. Had an ATC185 that I road into the
ground. Tried putting race gas in the lawn mower
(this would surely make it go faster) and use
to chase my sister around with our friends golf
cart. As long as I can remember, I have loved
going fast and knowing what makes a piece of
machinery work. I know, people think it's weird
that a girl would be interested in this kind
of stuff. But I can thank my father for making
me fix all the shit I broke. My father (Steve
Buhr) taught me to work hard and gave me great
respect for mechanical skills.
ATVSource:
Have you done any other types of racing before
sand drag racing?
ALICE: Yes.
I had a Honda CR 125 that I used to race until
a guy I dated cut me off in a corner causing
me to go down, ripping my ACL and MCL in my
left knee. Before the injury, I was heavily
involved in horse racing. I've been barrel racing
for 5 years, and a 3-time state champion. I
was the first and only woman to win the Oregon
State FFA tractor-driving contest. Being of
a highly competitive nature, my injury left
me unable to perform the tasks I loved to do.
Then Dave Moore and MP racing came along, and
I have never had more fun applying my talents.
I thank Dave for giving me the chance when everyone
else just thought I was some pretty girl who
knew nothing.
ATVSource:
We were informed that you are also a CDL licensed
truck driver?
ALICE: Growing
up on the farm, I started driving trucks at
an early age (before I was even legal to drive
on the road, but did it anyways.)
When I turned 18, I got my instate commercial
license and drove for Five Oak Farms for 2 years
in the farm season. I also ran all of the other
farm equipment such as the Quad Track 450hp
Stiger and an 8410 John Deere tractor. Then
for the last year I drove trucks for Clausen
Family Farms. I hauled beans with tandems to
Truitt Brothers to start the season, and then
drove the Western Star semi pulling doubles
to haul corn. After the farm season, I hauled
hazelnuts to Corneuis and Christmas trees to
Medford. There is nothing better than a woman
driving a BIG RIG, I love driving trucks fast
and I have the tickets to prove it. I can’t
wait to get an MP Racing semi so we can build
the hell out of it. Oh and I’ll be driving not
Dave. Truitt Brothers is where I met my friend
Bob (Buba) who introduced me to Dave.
ATVSource:
What is it that you love most about the sport
of ATV Drag Racing?
ALICE: It’s
all about going fast. Bring it on.
ATVSource:
So, what’s it like to work day in and out with
Dave Moore?
ALICE: Sometimes
I think Dave wants to kill me because I am all
about kickin his ass, but he wouldn’t have it
any other way. Dave and I are great friends
and work together productively. It is a great
honor to learn all the concepts of engine building
from Dave. Sometimes Dave gets a little upset
when I give him crap about doing things better
than him, but it’s all in fun. He needs some
competition on a daily basis and who better
to give it to him than me!!!
ATVSource:
What did you think about you recent trip to
sand mountain Utah and Glamis California?
ALICE: As
we drove out through the mountains I was thinking
how could there be sand out here and then there
it was. The biggest sand hill I have ever seen.
It was a little intimidating, but nothing I
was not going to try. I have to say, it is the
nicest sand hill I have ever seen and I look
forward to running it on Easter weekend. On
a side note, Dave was nice enough to blow my
bike up at the end of the day, but he fixed
it at our friends shop (Jason Vencent of Vencent
Racing) and we were off to Glamis. Glamis was
a good opportunity for me to show off some of
my mechanical skills and get in some good
drag racing.
ATVSource:
What are your long-term goals?
ALICE: To
work with my partner Dave and learn all there
is to know about building race motors and frames.
I know this is the opportunity of a lifetime
and I want to do all I can to build MP Racing
into the business that I know it can be.
ATVSource:
Dave what is it like working with Alice?
DAVE: The
girl is crazy. First off, to put up with me
all day long is a talent all in it self, Alice
never gives up. In the time we have been working
together, she has had 3 broken ribs, a broken
right hand and left hand thumb, yet she has
never missed a day of work. Alice is a perfectionist
and good is never good enough. We get along
better than anyone I know even though we are
both very competitive. We bet on everything
from racing to shooting guns to hammer thronging.
Oh and just for the record I am down $435.00
right now but were going double or nothing on
the next one.
P.S from ALICE:
I am still going to kick his butt.
