BRC PRAISES QUICK
INTERVENTION IN IMPORTANT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
DESERT LAWSUIT
POCATELLO,
ID - The California Association of Four Wheel
Drive Clubs led a coalition of recreational
access groups in entering the latest lawsuit
challenging recreational access to the
California Desert Conservation Area in Southern
California. The latest suit filed by anti-access
groups opposes the West Mojave Plan (WEMO plan)
and the Northern and Eastern Colorado Desert
Management Plan (NECO), which encompass a
significant amount of the land in Southern
California managed by the Bureau of Land
Management.
The Recreational Groups filed a motion to
intervene yesterday in U.S. District Court for
the Northern District of California (Case No. C
06-4884 SI). The groups petitioning the court
include the California Association of Four Wheel
Drive Clubs, Inc. (CA4WDC), BlueRibbon
Coalition, and the United Four Wheel Drive
Associations (UFWDA).
Dennis Porter, attorney for CA4WDC, stated
"The recreational groups seek to participate in
this lawsuit to defend the right to legitimate
recreational access to the Mojave Desert." The
Motion to Intervene is scheduled to be heard on
December 15, 2006.
Brian Hawthorne, Public Lands Director for
BRC said; "BRC is excited to be a part of 'Cal
4's intervention. This is an important case, not
only to our members in Southern California, but
also because of its potential to affect route
designation planning in other areas." Hawthorne
noted that the combined legal expertise
available with the three recreational groups is
impressive.
John Stewart, who works for CAFWDA as Natural
Resource Consultant said; "we are seeking to
retain access to these public lands as part of
the public's heritage and history."
