March 2002 -- At the Steele Creek
GNCC in Morganton, NC, Bill Ballance
got the holeshot and rode a new LRD
Aluminum Frame to his first victory
of the season. Ballance made the decision
to ride LRD’s USA made 6061 T6 Aluminum
frame after both of his quads were stolen
following the GNCC opener in Florida.
Combined with a brand new LRD tuned
300 cc motor and LRD exhaust, the aluminum
frame provided Ballance with a lighter
weight overall package that allowed
him to stay much fresher throughout
the grueling two-hour event. After the
race Bill commented, “The frame handles
just like I’m used to and the weight
savings made it a lot easier on my body.
I could not be happier with the frame
setup, its handling, or the results.”
The results are all the more impressive
given Ballance’s one day of practice
on the new ride before the race.
The
LRD frame ridden by Ballance has resulted
from the collaboration of LRD founder
Arlan Lehman and his new partner Mike
Cowan of MC Products. “Mike has aluminum
in his veins and has worked with the
material his entire life in applications
ranging from aerospace, to bicycles,
to motorcycles. He was intimately involved
with the aluminum frames for the Harley
Davidson VR 1000 racing project and
has manufactured ultra-light mountain
and road bicycle for the likes of Trek,
Specialized, Schwinn, Yeti, and Santa
Cruz,” states Lehman.
Based on a shared passion for ATVs
and the related performance technology,
Cowan and Lehman combined their expertise
to address the deficiencies they saw
with existing ATV frames. After nearly
two years of engineering, prototyping,
and testing in near total secrecy; the
duo debuted the frame at the 2002 Powersports
Dealer Expo in Indianapolis. Constructed
entirely of extruded US aluminum tubing
and CNC’d aluminum bits, LRD frames
feature weld quality, construction,
artisanship, and anodized finishes never
before seen in off-road motor sports.
Offering an approximate 20% weight
reduction over stock frames, LRD frames
strive to offer that elusive combination
of light weight, ride quality, handling,
and durability. “Aluminum has proven
itself in such demanding applications
as aerospace, auto racing, Super Bike,
and Moto Cross. We are confident that
LRD frames will set a new performance
benchmark for the ATV frames of the
future,” comments Cowan.
LRD is in production on its first
batch of 250R frames. Look for frames
for the Honda 400 EX and Yamaha Banshee
this summer with others to follow.
