FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Letters to Congress Tops Half a Million!
Mankato, MN/Fairfield, OH – September
29, 2000 – In response to the proposed snowmobile
ban in National Parks, thousands of readers were prompted to
email the US Congress to ask their Congressional Member to
support Bill
HR4560, authored by Senator Barbara Cubin. Cubin’s bill
simply overrides the action by the National Park service to
allow the use of snowmobiles in National Parks.
“The idea was to make it easy to write
Congress,” said MaximumSled.com Editor-In-Chief, Larry
Kaduce. “I know that everyone wanted to do it, but very few
had the time or were willing to go through the hassle of
looking up their legislator’s address, authoring a letter
and mailing it off.” So, the automatic
e-mail to Congress idea was born. With just one click,
readers could send a letter to all 526 members of Congress. To
date, there have been over 540,000 letters sent from
individuals to Congress with this effective tool, which is by
far the most effective campaign for the support of motorized
recreation ever launched.
The idea came about as a joint effort
between ATVsource.com and Maximumsled.com, which correlates
directly with the mission to ‘To work TOGETHER for the
well-being of the sport.’ ATVsource Publisher Craig
Goley explains, “Motorized recreation has taken a tremendous
amount of heat from the extreme environmentalists. By uniting
the two industries, our voice was twice as loud in Congress.
We have definitely caught their attention!” The letters were
sent at an average rate of nearly 34,000 e-mail messages per
week.
Since the automatic e-mail started, the
National Park service, under pressure from Congress has
started to rethink its position on the matter, the
manufacturers have joined together to fight the ban and
associations have launched lawsuits against the NPS for
specific park closures. Viki Eggers, Public Relations Director
for the Blue Ribbon Coalition said, "The threats we face
reach across all forms of recreation. By combining our efforts
– with all supporters of motorized recreation singing from
the same songbook, we will make the difference! Thanks to
efforts like this one, our position in Washington is much more
powerful!”
