FX400 Gets Third
At GNCC 7th Round Race!
(Clarksburg, WV 5/21/01) A Cannondale FX400 ATV, piloted by veteran racer Steve
Holbert, captured an impressive third place yesterday at the seventh round of the GNCC race series at Wilderness Waterpark in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
The third-place finish reflects incredible performances by both the 36-year-old Holbert and his FX400. After getting caught in a bottleneck at the start of the race, Holbert passed the entire field to finish the first lap in first place. Bad luck struck Holbert in lap two, when he blew a front tire. Holbert finished the lap and had his wheel changed out in the pits, and started lap three far back in the pack. Once again Holbert picked his way through the field, and had worked his way back to third as the race ended.
First and second-places went to riders aboard heavily customized Hondas. Holberts FX400 was essentially stock. The Cannondale had a totally stock, off-the-shelf motor, and some slight suspension modifications to accommodate Holberts preferences.
The Wilderness track features several small, easy rolling hills through the first part of the course. As racers get farther into the course, theyre forced to deal with numerous off-camber turns before encountering near 100-foot high hills laden with rocks, stumps, and roots. The course is also notorious for its several creek crossings and one huge mud hole that gets wider and deeper over the duration of the race.
The American-made Cannondale FX400 features a host of innovations, including a sophisticated, fuel-injected four-stroke engine, and the industrys first twin-spar perimeter aluminum ATV frame. The FX400s electric-start, dual overhead-cam engine also features a one-piece crankcase, cassette transmission, reversed cylinder head, and separate engine and clutch oils. The FX400s race-ready,
TIG-welded 6061-T6 aluminum frame is every bit as radical, with a linkless rear suspension, in-frame oil reservoir, and replaceable engine rails, brush guard, grab rail, sub-frame and steering stop.
Holbert recently began racing an FX400 as part of Cannondales ongoing testing and product development efforts.
