How
many of you Banshee owners have wondered what it would be like
to have Out-of-Frame Drag pipe power built into your In-frame
pipes? Due to the constraints of building a pipe that fits up
and into the chassis it hasn’t been done yet, or at least up
until now. This is where CPI, Custom Pipes Inc, comes in.
CPI has developed an In-Frame pipe that produces a claimed
seven more horsepower then the nearest competitor. Although
at this time we were unable confirm those HP figures on the
dyno, we have a testing method that in our opinion is even
better in determining the effectiveness of a modification.
Team Source went to our local
MX/Drag track and set up our timers for a 300 ft drag race.
For this test we compared the CPI pipes against the Power Pro
out-of-frame drag pipes. In 300 ft bracket drag racing where
consistency wins races, we found that the CPI pipes ran a
consistent .05 second or less difference between passes,
whereas the Power Pro varied as much as .3 seconds between
passes. In bracket drag racing the consistency of the CPI
pipes as compared to the Power Pro pipes make the CPI’s the
favored pipe.
Not only are the
CPI's more consistent, they are also easier to ride. The
CPI’s have more torque down low with plenty of ability to rev
out well into the upper range of the power curve. The
CPI’s pulled harder over a broader range as compared to the
Power Pros, and additionally the shift points were not nearly
as critical as the CPI’s had the torque to pull a short shift
out. The Power Pro pipes power delivery is very strong
and somewhat violent which makes the quad harder to handle on
the drag track. The CPI’s did not have the fastest times
of the day, the Power Pros took that honor by a slight margin
but the Power Pros also turned the slowest times of the day.
Further
testing was in order to see how these pipes would perform on
the racetrack in varying throttle situations. Team Source
fitted the CPI pipes to the #924 Banshee of
K&K
ATV Team Rider Neal Moser, who finished 2nd last year in
the GNC Open "B" TT Class and is currently ranked 1st in the
25+ Class and 3rd in the Open "A". At the Challenger Track in
which Neal ran these pipes, he placed 2nd in the Open "A" and
was leading the 25+ until being spun out placing him back in
the pack. Neal was able to pull 4 solid hole-shots with the
CPI pipes on. This was the only time all year that he was
able to get all 4 hole-shots in a single weekend. After the
race, Neal had this to say about the CPI pipes "Although these
pipes don’t offer quite as much torque way down low that I
would like to see, they do offer excellent mid to topend with
the ability to pull each gear farther then my normal pipes
that I run."
Team Source has heard stories
around the Internet BBS’s and chat rooms that the CPI pipes do
not fit the Banshee chassis that well.
However we were able to bolt our set of pipes up with ease.
The only problem that we had with the installation was that we
had to remove the paint off from the stinger tube joints to
get them together a little easier without having to use too
much force. Otherwise installation was easy and
straightforward, and comparable to most all other aftermarket
pipes for the Banshee.
The
CPI silencers are the nicest constructed silencers that we
have seen for a Banshee. With the CNC machined end-caps that
utilize cap screws instead of the common cheap rivet setup
found on most silencers, this makes re-packing the CPI
silencers much easier. Re-packing the CPI was a simple
process of removing the screws, removing the end cap and core,
wrapping the packing material, and re-installing the core,
cap, and fastening complete with the cap screws. Whereas
compared to the rivet style end cap fastening, we did not have
to have a drill to remove the rivets, nor have a rivet gun to
re-install the rivets.
Overall Team Source rates
these pipes very high for fast all around trail, competitive
riding, and/or racing. The CPI pipes are able to combine the
best qualities and advantages of Out-of-Frame pipes with that
of In-Frame pipes. They have the ability to rev out just
about as high as the Out-of-Frame pipes with nearly the same
torque of In-Frame pipes. Additionally as compared to one
another the CPI pipes have the versatility to be ridden in the
woods and you have the mobility to hang off the side of your
quad while pitching it side ways in those tight corners. The
quality and workmanship of the CPI’s is good, and the fit and
installation of them is equally as good.
