GNC ATV National
Round 5
RedBud MX Raceway
Buchanan, Michigan
May 19-20, 2001
By Brian
and Craig Goley

What
do you get when you combine screaming fans, sunny skies,
lots of dirt, over 450 quad pilots, and high-octane
fuel? You
get an exhilarating round five of the GNC ATV Racing
Series. Americas
Motocross Track, RedBud MX Raceway, located just
miles off of Business 31 in Buchanan, Michigan hosted
one of the most exciting rounds thus far.
With
its high-speed layout and monster jumps, RedBud proved
to be an adrenalin junkie's dream.
Huge air was on tap, as not one, but three
separate Monster hills brought every diehard ATV
fan to ooh's, ahh's, and the occasional
Thats gotta hurt!
The first of these major hills was the ski jump
located just three turns into the racecourse.
Riders were skiing 40 feet into the air and
carrying of the downhill side.
What an awesome site to see! It was amazing how
smoothly these quads and their pilots could fly; it was
as if they sprouted wings while in flight!
The
second challenging jump was a step-up double, that was
preceded by a rolling double.
This uphill step-up was a mean one and proved to
be especially hard on the quad racers.
If the riders didnt carry their speed after
the rolling double, it spelled almost certain doom if
they attempted the step-up.
We witnessed many failed attempts where the rider
either came up short, cased the jump or endoed. Ouch!
Monster
hill number three, also known as the Backside
Tabletop, was where a few unpleasant dismounts ended
a couple of riders chances for placing on the podium.
This huge table top was a 40 to 50 foot whooped
out uphill climb, flattening out to a 50 foot
"Table Top, and rounded out with a step down
landing for a total of about 150 feet of I dare you
to try it obstacle.
If any riders did not carry the necessary speeds
to fully clear the step-down, they where either hanging
on for dear life or saying good-bye to their quad
and eating dirt.
Jeremiah Jones captured the overall
win by riding flawlessly to grab the checkers in both
motos. Timothy
Farr took home second place while Travis Spader
completed the overall results with a third place podium
spot.
Moto
one saw Travis T-Doc Spader on his Lone Star
grabbed the holeshot. He was closely followed by Shane Dog Hitt, Jeremiah
Jones, Tim Farr and Doug Digger Gust.
Jones didnt waste any time putting a move on
Hitt and taking over second place.
Jones then quickly reeled in Spader and proceeded
to grab the lead. Doug
Gust moved past Farr for third, but had an unfortunate
dismount on the backside tabletop.
It was not for the lack of speed, but too much
that sent his quad air born. We thought he was trying to
break the world distance record.
Gust launched his yellow Suzuki thumper into
orbit and promptly dismounted from the rear.
Gust was uninjured, but his quad sustained major
alterations to the left rear wheel and axle.
The course worker stationed at that jump told us, I
had thought for sure he was not getting up from that
crash. It
looked bad. Moto one ended with Jones - an easy
winner, Spader taking second by limping across the
finish with a flat tire, and pulling up the third spot
was Hitt.
In
Moto two, Shane Hitt launched his quad off the starting
gate to take the holeshot.
Eating roost behind Hitt was Tim Farr, Jeremiah
Jones and Travis Spader.
Tim Farr didnt hesitate in motoring past Shane
Hitt to take the lead.
Jones quickly followed suit and began to nip at
Farrs heals. It
didnt take Jeremiah long to make a move on Farr and
take over the first position.
Jeremiah put his quad on Cruise as he
opened up a huge lead over Farr and the rest of the
field. The
real fight for positions was third through fifth.
Throughout the race, Gust, Spader, and Kory Ellis
fought hard and changed positions often.
The action packed racing had the fans on their
feet at every corner and jump, while watching their
favorite riders battling it out. At the end of Moto two,
it was Jeremiah Jones, Tim Farr, and Doug Gust.
| Race Notes: |
RedBuds Axle Breaking Exhibition - The racing was fast, furious, and hard on quad components.
We saw over seven axles snapped in half and a couple of
broken front tires spindles. The
most noticeable were the axles snapping. You could hear them snap from across the park.
We had the opportunity to look at several of the axles and
noticed they appeared to break at the rear bearing carrier or at the
lock nut. The majority of the broken axles were produced by Dura
Blue.
|
H-Bomb Films Captures Race Video - Wes Miller and the
H-Bomb crew were on hand to film the Pro racing.
Wes indicated the video would possibly be used for Huevos
IV. Wes wouldnt
give us many details about his fourth film, but he did say there
should be some surprises in store. |
| Daring Thieves Raid RedBud In an unfortunate event,
thieves drove off with a trailer full of quads and racing equipment.
The trailer was located the next day by Michigan State
Police, but was found completely empty.
The GNC racing family showed the ultimate compassion as they
held an auction and collected donations for the devastated owner.
$1000 dollars was raised and donated to the victim.
Though it doesnt replace the stolen quads or even come
close to the amount lost, its a grand tribute to how close the
racing family is. |
| ATV Racings Growing Popularity
RedBud officials told us that 472 racers sign up for the event.
It is exciting to see such a huge turnout at the GNC races
this year. ATV racing
is quickly reaching record turnout levels at all of the major
events. |
