2001 GNC ATV National
Round 7
High Point Raceway
Mount Morris, Pennsylvania
June 23-24,
2001

By Brian and Craig Goley
6/26/2001

Jeremiah Jones wins the overall at High Point.Round 7 of the Maxxis Tire GNC racing series took Team Source to Mount Morris, Pennsylvania and the High Point Raceway Facility for yet another exciting round of Quad MX action.  Weather conditions for the weekends racing event started out wet and muddy, but by Sundays Mains, the racers and fans couldnt have asked for better weather.  Saturday's qualifiers saw cloudy skies with spotty rain showers.  The racing circuit was muddy throughout the day.  Riders had to fight the mucky mess and the huge ruts being carved in each corner as they fought to make it to their classs main event on Sunday.  The AMA/ATVA referee, along with Racer Production officials, elected to shorten the heat races because of the very wet and muddy conditions.  Several last chance qualifiers were moved to Sunday due to the late starting time of the races on Saturday.

Jeremiah Jones, recording a 1-1 moto win, captured the overall by putting on two very strong performances to grab the checkers in both motos. Kory Elis (3-2) took home second place while Timothy Farr (4-4) completed the overall results with a third place podium spot.

Doug "Digger" Gust clears the step-up double.Doug Digger Gust pulled the holeshot in moto 1 and took an early lead over the field. Gust was followed by Jason Luburgh, Timothy Farr, Kory Ellis, Dana Creech, and then the rest of the field.  Chris Gary, John Natalie Jr., Keith Little, and Joe Byrd all tangled on the start.  Travis Spader was able to sneak by on the outside, but was held up, as he had to hit the brakes hard to avoid a tumbling Joe Byrd.

Wheres Jeremiah Jones you ask?  Jeremiah had to avoid the pile-up as well and was running in 9th place.  Jones didnt take long to move up through the field.  Within the first lap, Jeremiah had quickly moved up into 4th position. On the next couple of laps, Jeremiah, now in 3rd, and Jason Luburgh exchanged positions while entering and exiting the whoops section.  Jeremiah tight roped his quad on two wheels through the very rutted right hand turn coming out of the whoops.  This allowed Jason to take back 2nd.

On the next lap, Jeremiah took control of 2nd at the very same turn he and Jason has previously bang bars, but this time Jeremiah cut the corner sharp forcing Jason to take the high side of the turn and nearly flipping Jason as his quad ran up the inside high banking.  Jason made a valiant effort to retake 2nd at the step-up double by clearing the double as Jeremiah cautiously singled the jumps, but Jasons attempt ended as he killed his engine on the landing and allowed Jeremiah to open up a huge lead over Jason and set his sights on Doug Gust.

Gust, Jones, & Farr airing it out.Jones was flying as he quickly reeled in Gust.  Jones was showing Gust his front wheels at every corner to let him know that he was right there and one mistake would cost Gust the lead.  Jones was riding so hard that on a few corners he found himself riding two wheels instead of all four.  This slowed Jones just enough to allow Gust a chance to pull away, but Jones would easily catch back up to the heels of Gust within seconds after his two wheel circus acts.

Gust looked as if he was beginning to tire or maybe it was Jones turning up the heat as he past Gust and never looked back.  At the halfway point it was Jones, Gust, Elis, and Farr.  Dana Creech and Shane Hitt fought for the 5th position.

Moto 1 saw not one, but three hard fought battles for positions.  It was hard to watch all of the action as every top position was being contested. Jones and Gust banged it out for 1st and 2nd while Elis and Farr changed position several times for 3rd and 4th.  They were followed up by Dana Creech and Shane Hitt fighting for 5th and 6th.  Jones won with a 5 second lead over second place Doug Gust. The finish order was:  Jeremiah Jones, Doug Gust, Kory Elis, Timothy Farr, Shane Hitt.

Moto 2 holeshot goes to Gust...Jones...ok, Gust.At the start of moto 2, the holeshot award was tough to call, but after video review, we would have to give the holeshot to Gust as the picture doesnt lie.  Jeremiah did motored hard through the long sweeping turn and took the lead exiting.  Based on our video and technically Gust reaching the first turn in the lead, well give him the holeshot.  Gust and Jones were followed by Farr, Elis, Spader, Creech, Jasmin Plante, and then the rest of the field.

Moto 2 looked more like follow the leader than the bar-to-bar, wheel-to-wheel grinding action we saw in the first moto.  After Jones and Gust exited turn number 1, Jones put on the afterburners and said see you later. Jones was so dominate that he quickly distanced himself from the rest of the field and put the autopilot on. Gust was holding down second, but was knocked out of contention when his chain suffered a failure.  Kory Ellis capitalized on Gusts misfortunes and took over 2nd.  Tim Farr was charging hard in 3rd, however, Farr's charge was held back by Spader's pursuit. Farr and Spader battled for most of the race. Spader was finally able to pass Farr and take 3rd.   Moto 2 finish order was:  Jones, Ellis, Spader, and Farr.

Race Notes:
John Natalie Jr. talks about his new ride.John Natalie Jr. and Keith Little change rides to Cannondale. - Cannondale has entered the GNC ATV racing scene with new rides for John Natalie and Keith Little.  Both riders were previously riding for NAC'S racing team before deciding to move to the Cannondale.  Does this mean Cannondale is the first manufacture to provide true ATV "Factory Rides"?  From what we have seen and heard, the answer looks to be a yes.

It's not that hard to put up a flag...right?Nice Flag Display - Who put up the Flags? Can anyone tell us what's wrong with the picture? They did get the American Flags up ok, but several State flags must have really confused someone.
