Production's
2001 17th Annual ATV Dirt Days
Loretta Lynn's
Hurricane Mills, TN
August 18-19, 2001
Team
Source attended Round 11 of the ATVA Maxxis ATV
Nationals held at Loretta Lynns ranch in Hurricane
Mills, TN. Our departure time at 3:00am Saturday morning
meant we would arrive at Lorettas somewhere between
11 11:30am. Our
8 hour drive was cut down to just over 6 hours as we
pulled into Lorettas around 9:30am.
Now thats flying. When we rolled into the
track we were greeted with waves and smiles from some of
the many racing friends we have made over the year. Stepping out of the car and trying to stretch out the body,
we gazed out across the valley to see a picturesque
view of the track and the facilities.
Lorettas MX Park is only used
twice a year for two racing events; the AMA Amateur
Motocross and the ATVA GNC ATV Nationals.
During the rest of the year, the many horses from
Loretta Lynns Dude Ranch call the track home, as it
becomes a pasture during the off season.
Doug Gust, while smacking his lips, commented on
the track, Something tastes funny.
Looks like Gust was referring to the mouth full
of Tennessee dirt which just happens to contain many
road apples ground into the soft track.
Coming
into this weekends GNC race, Jeremiah Jones was
holding a comfortable lead in the points race over Tim
Farr. As
noted by race announcer Mark Banger, it was possible that Jones could rap up his
first ever Pro Class Championship title with an overall
win. With
only one round of racing left for the series, this race
would be Jeremiahs best opportunity to capture the
title as Jeremiah has been strong in all of the MX
events whereas Farr has dominated most of the TT races.
Jeremiah Jones, recording a 1-2
moto win, captured the overall by putting on two very
strong performances. Tim Farr (2-3) took home second
place while Doug Digger Gust (5-1) completed the
overall results with a third place podium spot.
The
start of Pro Moto #1 gave way to Tim Farr aboard his
Baldwin Motorsports/White Bros. 4-stroke grabbing the
holeshot. Tim
was followed closely by Jason Luburgh (TC Racing),
Travis T-Doc Spader (K&K ATV), Bill Ballance
(Yes, you read it right.
Mr. Ballance was up there with the best of the
pros battling through the tight s-turn corners.
We couldnt believe our eyes as we watched the
video), and then Jeremiah Jones.
At the first two 90 degree turns,
Jones quickly passed Ballance and was working on Luburgh.
Before the first lap was finished, both Spader
and Jones were able to get around Luburgh and into the 2nd
and 3rd spots.
During the 2nd and 3rd
lap, Farr had a comfortable lead between himself and
the battle between Spader and Jones.
By the end of the third lap, Jones had moved past
Spader and had his sights set on Farr.
Within the same lap, Jones was able to pull within
attacking distance and was applying heavy pressure to
Farr. We
could not believe how fast Jones was able to reel in
Farr.
Jones
made several attempts to pass Farr, but Farr held his
line forcing Jones to retreat or take a different line.
Once Jones saw his opening, he took it.
Jones made his move WOT around the long sweeping
turn just before the finish line whoops section.
Once Jones cleared Farr, he was gone!
As we have written in previous race coverage
reports, Jones
put on the afterburners and said see you later. Jones
was so dominant that he quickly distanced himself from
Farr and put the autopilot on.
By
the halfway point, it was Jones with a commanding lead,
followed by Tim Farr, Travis Spader, Jason Luburgh, Dana
Creech, Doug Gust, and Ben Jackson. Doug Digger
Gust was well back in the pack coming out of the first
set of turns, but he quickly moved his way up to the
front with several laps of hard riding. Through
Bill Ballance received a decent start he was steadily
moving in the wrong direction.
Bill lost positions and was struggling to hold
onto 10th place.
On
the white flag lap, Jones looked as if he was
experiencing a problem and he was slowing down
considerably. We
noticed his quad didnt sound right and saw puffs of
smoke. Everyone was on the edge of the seats as Jones looked like he
was struggling to keep his quad running.
It turns out that Jones lost the bottom end of
his engine (transmission) and was trying to find a gear
to make it to the finish line. With the huge lead he
had, Jones was able to grab the checkers. Farr and
Spader battled to the 2nd and 3rd
spot while being followed by Luburgh, Gust, Jackson,
Creech, Hitt, Ellis, and Hale rounding out the top 10.
The
start of Pro Moto #2 saw Doug Gust aboard
his TC/ Suzuki DR 4-stroke grabbing the holeshot.
Gust was followed by Jason Luburgh, Tim Farr,
Travis Spader, Michael Walsh, and then Jeremiah
Jones.
Jason
Luburgh looked as if he was performing a repeat of moto
#1. His
quick start was impressive, but he was quickly passed by
Tim Farr, Travis Spader, Kory Ellis, and Jeremiah Jones.
The
action started quickly as Dana Creech took a wicked
spill while trying to negotiate the 10 Commandments.
The 10 Commandments are a set of 10 whoops ready
to separate the rider from his or her quad.
The video showed Dana and a second rider wheel-to-wheel until what looks like Danas
quad getting
spring boarded as his wheels bounced off the other
riders. The crash sent
Dana flying through the air and landing hard on the
outside of the track.
Jimmy Elza, and Keith Little were collected up in
the mayhem.
Gust
built a comfortable lead on the first lap while Farr,
Spader, Luburgh, Ellis, and Jones battled behind him.
Jones was able to pass Luburgh and Ellis in the
10 Commandments and then started to work on Spader.
At
the halfway point, Gust had built a huge lead.
Farr was holding down 2nd and his line
while trying desperately to hold Jones at bay.
Jones nipped and banged on Farr for several laps
until Jones was able to power by Farr.
With just
two laps remaining and the unbelievable lead Gust had
built, Jones was only able to close the gap by a few
seconds. Jones
told us he knew he couldnt catch Gust so he settled
in for the second spot and he knew it was enough for the
overall win.
At the checkers, it was
Gust, Jones, Farr, Spader, and Joe Byrd (East Coast ATV) rounding out the top 5.

Record
Turnout marks Loretta Lynns the largest ATV race every - 715
riders signed up for the event.
695 actually raced while the remaining didnt pass pre-race
inspections. The record participants sent the Racer Productions crew into
a whirlwind of frenzy. Saturdays
heat races went well into the evening hours and had to be carried
over to Sunday morning.

FMF Big Rig Display at
the GNCs? Well, not exactly.
This is the burned out shell of the FMF/Pilot Racing rig.
It was there for the AMA Amateur Motocross event held the
previous weekend. As
you can see it was completed destroyed.

2000 GNCC
Champion Enters Race - Bill Ballance, reigning GNCC Champion,
showed up at Lorettas and signed up for the race. With
Ballances entry, the pro riders list was 21 which forced the pros
to run a heat race to narrow the field down to 20 riders.
The starting gate only allows for 20 riders.
Bill placed 11th overall, not bad for an Cross
Country racer. Bill is
considered a pro rider as he has also competed in the Pro Quad
Championship Series of the Monster Jam events this past winter.
Ballance is also the current points leader in the GNCC series. |
