The
American Sand Drag
Association Winter Nationals
was held November 1st thru the 5th in Laughlin, Nevada at the
Avi Resort and Casino. Racers from all over the country come
to race in the 4 day event. The Winter Nationals are the
premier sand drag event to attend or race in. The ASDA has
sanctioned races across the country during the year
culminating in the Winter Nationals. The ASDA’s format is
bracket racing.
This years racing proved to
be exciting as ever as Keith Ahart from Phoenix, AZ took the
championship in the MP-1 (4.49 and faster) class over Tammy
Brooks of Coppell, Texas. Ahart ran a 4.484 elapsed time on a
4.47 dial time at 70 mph over Brooks’ 4.331 elapsed time on a
4.30 dial time at 71 mph. Ahart was riding a custom 4 wheeled,
4 stroke powered machine, whereas Brooks was riding a Brooks
chassis Banshee with a PortWorks Yamaha RD500.
In the MP-2 class, (4.50 to
5.99) the racing was equally as exciting. Mike Brooks, also
from Coppell TX, and husband of Tammy Brooks, took the
championship over Gary "Elvis" Berenbrock of Conklin, MI.
Brooks ran a 4.84 elapsed time on a 4.70 dial time at 66 mph,
where Berenbrock ran a 4.647 elapsed time on a 4.60 dial time
at 69 mph. Brooks was riding his own Brooks chassis Banshee,
and Berenbrock was riding a custom 4 stroke powered trike.
