Wisconsin Quad Championship Series Round 3 visits Sugar
Camp MX Rhinelander, WI July 5
Hot
and dusty conditions challenged racers as the exciting
Sugar Camp Motocross track near Rhinelander was host to
round three of the Wisconsin State Quad Championship
Series Saturday July 5th. After the mud at Tigerton for
round one and the cool, cloudy stadium-style Gravity Park
for round two, the expansive sandy natural terrain of the
Sugar Camp Track & Trail facility combined with the dust
and heat brought yet another challenge to those chasing
points in the Quad-only Motocross race series.
Some
of the best racing took place midway through the program
in the Senior (age 35+) class between Chuck Wachs of
Berlin, WI on his Suzuki 250 Quadracer and Wausau rider
Willie Sedlar. In moto one, Wachs holeshot led the pack
through the wide sweeping right-hand first turn. As they
cleared the first jump and entered the next tight corner,
Wachs stalled his Suzuki and was unable to get going again
until everyone had passed and disappeared over the next
set of jumps. Up front, Sedlar and his Honda 250-R was in
a battle for first with Russell Swinggum of Verona, WI.
Midway through the first lap Sedlar ducked left and passed
Swinggums Yamaha Raptor for the lead. Meanwhile Wachs was
working his way forward through the pack eventually
passing the Honda 400EX of Wausau, WI rider Jeff Nowak,
then Swinggum as he closed on Sedlar. As first Sedlar then
Wachs took the white flag on the last lap they were close
enough to make contact. As they reached half a lap left in
the race Sedlar began to tire as Wachs tried several
attempts to pass, each move countered by Sedlar and his
Honda. As they neared the end of the last lap Wachs made a
pass that Sedlar could not counter and went on for the
Moto one win. In Moto two a strong start by Sedlar was
foiled as he got caught in the fence early and had to
settle for a fourth place finish. Nowak came back quickly
for second behind Moto two winner Wachs, moving the Wausau
rider up to a second place overall finish in the Senior
class.
Other riders who were unstoppable despite the heat and
dust were Stephen Propson from Brownsville, WI winning
both Motos by a wide margin in both the Vet (age 25+)
class and 4-Stroke Trophy class. Matt Altobelli from Iron
Mountain, MI traded Moto wins with Scott Mosier of
Escanaba, MI while Schofield, WI rider Cory Wilk used a
5-4 Moto score to snag third in the 4-Stroke Pro class.
David Rebstock of Antigo, WI padded his Quad Point Series
lead with a solid double Moto win in the 2-Stroke Trophy
class as did Jeremy Schaefer of Mosinee, WI in the Blaster
class. Also posting 1-1 Moto wins and leading their
classes in the Quad Points Series were D.J. Spurling of
Reedsburg, WI in Pee Wee and Deana Friebel from Kaukauna,
WI in Women.
Race
day temperatures were around 90, but constant track
watering by the Sugar Camp crew kept the dust down to a
manageable level. Wisconsin Quad Racing Points Series
action returns to the Rhinelander track August 2nd after
visiting Gravity Park near Chilton, WI July 12th and
Tigerton, WI at the Embarrass River ATV Park July 19th.
The Series concludes stops at Sports & Competition MX Park
near Denmark, WI August 8th and Gravity Park August 23rd.
The season will be capped by the Wisconsin State Quad
Championship September 20th at Tigerton.
