AMA Suzuki Grand National Cross Country Series

It’s Official: 1811 Individual Riders Made the Unadilla GNCC the Biggest Ever

GNCC RacingMorgantown, WV – The mud has dried and the numbers were crunched. All told, 1811 individual racers competed in the first-ever Unadilla round of the Suzuki Grand National Cross Country Series last weekend. This shattered the previous GNCC Series record set this year in Georgia, and made it one of the largest ATV and motorcycle races anywhere, ever.

“We knew the Unadilla GNCC would be big, but we weren’t sure it would be this big,” says GNCC Trail Boss Jeff Russell. “Everyone wanted a shot at that motocross track, and there’s a great local off-road scene in the Northeast.”

Racers can only compete in one class in the GNCC Series, so the 1811 number is not the result of 600 riders entering three classes each – there truly were 1811 riders on hand. On Saturday, 411 ATV racers competed, along with 179 Youth minicycle racers and 61 pee wee riders – a total of 240 youth competitors. Then Sunday shattered the existing records when 1130 different motorcycle racers signed up.

GNCC racing extends a thank you to the Robinson family, owners and operators of Unadilla Valley Sports Center, as well as WNYOA, and the late Jim Mitrowitz, who helped organize several local riding clubs around competing in the GNCC.

The next round of the Suzuki Grand National Cross Country Series takes place this weekend with the Power Line Park GNCC in St. Clairsville, Ohio. The Unadilla GNCC was taped for an airing on the Outdoor Life Network. The series resumes on television on October 18, and the GNCC races air Tuesdays at 5 p.m., Thursdays at 11 a.m. and Saturdays at 2 p.m. EST.

The AMA-sanctioned Suzuki Grand National Cross Country series is America’s premier off-road racing series. The 13-round series is produced exclusively by Racer Productions. Cross-country racing is one of the most physically demanding sports in the world. The nearly three-hour long GNCC races lead as many as 1500 riders through tracks ranging from eight to twelve miles in length. With varied terrain including hills, mud, dirt, rocks and motocross sections, GNCC events are tests of both survival and speed. GNCC featured sponsors include Parts Unlimited, Moose, Maxxis, Pirelli, Wiseco, Klotz, FMF and ITP, and riders compete for over $1.5 million in series prizes and contingency money. Associate sponsors include Moose Utility Division, Scott, Alpinestars, Öhlins, Cometic, Outerwears, Race Tools, Twin Air, SFB Racing, Thor, Motion Pro, MotoTee’s, Warrior and Laeger’s. Media Sponsors include Dirt Rider Magazine, ATV Sport Magazine and Racer X Illustrated. For more information log on to GNCCRacing.com.
