2006 Northern Nevada Flat Track TT Championship
Series
Round 3: Rattlesnake Raceway
By Brian Starbuck
Flat Track Racing Returns to Fallon
FALLON, NV, MAY 20
On May 20th the Lahontan Auto Racing
Association (LARA) welcomed motorcycle and quad
ATV racers back to the Rattlesnake Raceway in
Fallon, NV for round three of the 2006 Northern
Nevada Flat Track TT Championship Series. And
boy was it a happy reunion! Since the rainout of
the April 22 flat track opener at Rattlesnake,
riders young and old from all over N. NV had
been very antsy to try out the newly renovated
race track.
In process since the end of the ’05 stock car
season, the LARA, with track builder Harold
Lease, has expanded the stock car oval to 1/3 of
a mile and raised the banking to 15 degrees.
Riders walking the track before practice seemed
dwarfed by corners rising to almost 40 feet
above the infield. “There’s enough room here at
Rattlesnake to have it all,” said Harold, as he
pointed out the main features of a newly cut TT
course. “Since I race myself, I wanted a course
layout that would be fun for skilled riders not
just fast bikes. Watch, with all those corners
and chicanes down in the infield I think you’ll
see a lot more opportunities for the best kind
of racing – back and forth passing!”
The LARA also used their experience with
local dirt to build a great flat track which
held up very well for being created from brand
new materials. It was probably the first time
most riders got a good taste of what it means to
race on a truly tacky surface. And you could see
the differences in results from the heat races
to the main events. Between the huge banked
corners, the technical infield and the
blue-grooving, the pits were constantly buzzing
with bench racing recommendations. From novices
to Pros, everybody was having fun doing
something to adjust their advantages.
