Sunny skies greeted the ATV racers at round
three of the 2008 WV State HS Championship held
at Timberline Ski Resort in Davis, WV. The track
was dry and the rocks were exposed as the ATV
racers raced through the seven-mile course. Gabe
Phillips took the hole shot and never looked
back showing no signs of his early summer race
injury. By the end of the race it was Phillips,
Honda pilot Bryan Channell and in third was John
Marmol Jr.
Phillips talked about his race in
the post race interview with Roy Dains. “I just
pulled the hole shot and took off. The first
lap, I just set my own pace. I paced myself and
didn’t make any stupid mistakes, like I made in
the past. I just tried to keep her on four
wheels and just keep moving forward.” Phillips
really only stumbled once but it was a quick fix
and did not effect his lead. “Last lap, Bunnell
was just behind me and I clipped a tree. It went
from breaker bumps into a turn and I hit the
tree with that tire. I had to get off and move
the front end over and it really didn’t take
that long.” By the end of the race Phillips was
around six minutes ahead of Channell. Channell
has consistently been finishing in the top four
and won at Pheasant Run. Five minutes behind
Channell was Pennsylvania Yamaha rider Marmol.
Marmol was the top B Class rider out of Open B
and Richie Nolan took home second in the class
and fifth overall. Behind Richie Nolan came a
pack of Open C 16-29 riders. They all made six
laps on the track and all finished within thirty
seconds of each other. Pennsylvania Honda rider
Robby Johnston edged out West Virginia Yamaha
rider Mark Moore and fellow Pennsylvania Honda
rider Nathan Yoder. Behind them finishing ninth
overall was the top School Boy rider Josh Dains.
He finished with six laps and was over ten
minutes ahead of second place in that class
Canan Summerfield. In the Open C 30 + Peter
Dandrea edged out Ride ‘n’ Dirty Racing’s Kevin
Helmick.
