ATV Pro Motocross
National set for Glen Helen
SAN BERNARDINO — The fastest four-wheeled
All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) racers in America will
make their return to the world-famous Glen Helen
Raceway on March 8 for the opening round of the
2009 ITP Tires/Moose Racing AMA ATV Motocross
Championship Presented by Parts Unlimited.
The Glen Helen race will feature the top
professional ATV riders in the country competing
on a closed course featuring jumps, bumps,
corners and the infamous Glen Helen hills.
Riders will compete on custom-built 450cc
machines from top manufacturers such as Can-Am,
Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Polaris, Suzuki and
Yamaha.
Competitors stand to rake in six-figure incomes
from the large purse and contingency bonuses,
all while competing for the most coveted honor
in ATV racing: The AMA Pro Motocross
Championship.
Pro riders will practice Saturday and race
Sunday.
Fans are invited to come early each day to tour
the open pro pits and attend free autograph
sessions, while also checking out the best
amateur riders in the nation, who will be racing
all weekend.
The event takes place at Glen Helen Raceway,
located north of San Bernardino in the area of
Devore.
The area rests against the side of a large
mountain onto which Glen Helen has carved its
256-acre raceway facility.
Glen Helen is on county property and shares its
venue with other county organizations, such as
Glen Helen Regional Parks, Blockbuster Pavilion
and the Sheriff Training Center.
The pro class will race in two 20-minute races
Sunday, with the best combined scores of both
races determining the overall winner.
Big story of the weekend is defending AMA
Champion Dustin Wimmer of Center Valley, Pa.
The 21-year old Rockstar/Yoshimura Suzuki rider
won an impressive five Nationals in 2008 to take
home his first championship.
Honda rider and 2008 runner-up Joe Byrd returns
ready to reclaim the number one spot he lost to
Wimmer last year.
Wimmer’s teammate “Digger” Doug Gust enters his
21st season as a Pro, but he’s still a top
competitor after finishing third in points last
season.
Top teams in full force include Can-Am’s squad
of John Natalie, Jr., Jeremy Lawson, Cody Miller
and Brandon Smith.
Kawasaki’s Josh Creamer and Chad Wienen will
challenge for wins this season, as well as New
Jersey’s Pat Brown, who rides for Yamaha.
Glen Helen is located in the Glen Helen Regional
Parks & Recreation Area, Devore, in San
Bernardino County (within 60 miles of Los
Angeles, Orange, and San Diego Counties.
From Los Angeles and San Diego, take Interstate
15 North, then Interstate-215 South to Devore
Exit and follow signs.
