Current Norasport Open Quad British Supermoto Champion Craig Kilner suffered a disastrous first round at the Three Sisters circuit in Wigan. Held over the Easter bank holiday, the heavy rain and wet track did little to help Craig as technical problems and bad luck plagued his 500cc 2 stroke Rotax engine quad, even before he had started practice!

After months of preparation, plenty of winter fitness training and the pressure of retaining the championship title, Craig was unable to tighten the spark plugs before the start of practice. As the track got really wet; he came off, smashing his throttle in the process. Having to fix the throttle quickly before going into qualifying, then the spark plugs failed leaving him with just one cylinder and qualification in last place.

Determined not to be undone by the terrible start, Craig set about working his way from 16th to sixth in race one. Battling hard and trying to catch fifth, Craig had to concede and take the sixth place finish. As he returned to the pits, another problem as his fuel pump packed in, leaving little time to fix before race two. Having spent the day mainly repairing the quad, tiredness kicked in and Craig dug deep to pull out a gritty performance, taking on Mike Taylor for third place before his kill cord came out, dropping him to fifth place. In a grueling race three, Craig worked hard and got through to fifth, finishing fourth overall in the class.

A clearly dejected Craig commented after the race: “It’s been a disappointing day. Doing all my own mechanic work when so many things go wrong, then racing on top of that is extremely draining. Hopefully I can come away from here, resolve the issues with the quad and concentrate in the next round on getting back into the top three.”

With the recent news that round two has been cancelled due to environmental noise issues, Craig’s next race will be at Blyton Park, Lincs on the 3rd June in the 2012 Norasport Open Quad British Supermoto Championship. Thanks to Norasport and all the organizers at the track in making this event so enjoyable for both riders and supporters. Craig would also like to thank all his sponsors ACT Roofing, SPL, Hunslet Roofing Supplies, Mick Gardener Racing, Goldspeed Tyres, DWT, ATV World, ZIP Wear, K&K Potts, DDD Grab Hire, Light Main, Ducati John, B R Tyres & Norasport.
