Following a restarted first race and dramatic crash which left Craig Kilner tumbling to the tarmac, round five of the 2012 Norasport Open Quad British Supermoto Championship was always going to be difficult but Craig overcame all the odds and secured a superb podium finish taking third overall at the Three Sisters circuit at Wigan.

Riding his 500cc 2 stroke twin Rotax engine quad second quickest in qualifying, race one started well having maintained his second spot from the grid and looking to pass Gareth Thomas for the lead finding good lines into the straight to pass. On the fourth lap the race was red flagged due to a crash further down the pack. On the restart it was much of the same with Craig aiming to pass for the lead. This time he made it stick and on the second lap was in front, only to notice some serious rattling on his quad. “Next thing I knew, I was going into a corner about 40mph and my nerf-bar/clutch cover casing ripped off, flipping the quad over and into the air. I rolled across the tarmac, picked myself up and tried to carry on but was black flagged.” explained Craig.

Some quick repairs later and race two was underway with Craig starting at the back of the grid. Digging deep, he rode superbly and passed his was up to third place and trying to reel in Thomas and Cathal McCartan however since the crash, the quad was vibrating horribly causing severe arm pump leaving Craig to settle in third.

Making a place and going into second place from the start in race two Craig realised the crash and subsequent fightback into the top three had taken it’s toll on his fitness. On the third lap, McCartan got passed on the tabletop. His entire body aching, Craig held on and took the third place finish and with that, remained close enough in the championship points standings to challenge the top two.

Championship Standings

1. Gareth Thomas  385
2. Cathal McCartan  373
3. Craig Kilner  361

Craig commented; “Besides the crash, to have come back from that and finish third is a bonus! It’s still tight at the top and I still made a pass but my confidence took a bit of a knock after the crash. My fitness was shocking but I’ll work on that before Blyton.”

His next event will be round six of the Norasport Open Quad British Supermoto Championship at Blyton Park, Lincs on August 25-26-27th. Craig’s son Cole Kilner has also been in action as he entered the prestigious ACU Youth British Quadcross Championship last weekend on his 50cc Cobra. Held at the FatCat moto park in Doncaster, the deep sand based track was a challenge for both the younger riders and adults alike. Cole completed all of the gruelling four races and finished in a very respectable fifth place overall.

Craig would also like to thank his sponsors ACT Roofing, SPL, Hunslet Roofing Supplies, Mick Gardener Racing, Goldspeed Tyres, DWT, ATV World, ZIP Wear and Norasport.
