2005 KAWASAKI MULE™ 3010 TRANS4X4
WORLD’S FIRST FOUR-PASSENGER 4X4 OFF-ROAD UTILITY
VEHICLE HIGHLIGHTED BY FIRST TRANSFORMABLE CARGO
BED
Kawasaki,
the brand that introduced the original off-road
utility vehicle in 1988, is leading the way with
an innovative new vehicle that sets the industry
standard for years to come.
The all-new 2005 MULE™ 3010 Trans4x4
is the world’s first four-passenger 4x4 off-road
utility vehicle that can be transformed by the operator
into a two-passenger vehicle with an extended cargo
bed.
Based
on the popular MULE 3000 series, the new MULE 3010
Trans4x4’s spacious four-passenger cab easily accommodates
four adults. But with a couple of quick adjustments,
the operator can fold down the rear bench seat and
extend the cargo bed farther forward to increase
payload capacity. When the operator wants to transform
it back to a four-passenger vehicle, the same quick
adjustments are made in reverse order.
The wheelbase of the MULE 3010 Trans4x4
is 300mm longer than that of the MULE 3010 4x4,
but features the same styling, car-like controls,
dashboard and front under-hood storage. Additional
body features for the Trans4x4 include retractable
rear seat belts and padded rear-passenger grab handles.
Plus, the steel screen separating the cargo bed
from the cab can be moved forward or back, depending
on the chosen mode.
The MULE 3010 Trans4x4 utility vehicle
utilizes the same durable and reliable powertrain
as the MULE 3010 4x4. The quiet, liquid-cooled industrial
V-twin engine has a proven record for hard-working
reliability and is matched to Kawasaki’s highly
refined continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The CVT itself has been fine-tuned
for the Trans’ higher passenger and cargo capacity,
and features than its siblings high and low range,
plus reverse. The operator can also select either
two- or four-wheel drive operation, with power being
transferred to a shaft-driven dual-mode differential
and limited-slip front differential.
One of the benefits of the MULE
3010 Trans4x4’s extended chassis is that engineers
were able to increase fuel capacity nearly 20 percent,
from 5.3 gallons to 6.3 gallons.
Combined with a heavy duty DeDion/leaf
spring rear suspension system – borrowed from the
MULE 3010 Diesel 4x4 – the MULE 3010 Trans4x4 has
a cargo capacity of 400 pounds in four-passenger
guise, and 800 pounds with the cargo bed extended
forward. Plus, with an optional towing hitch, the
new Trans can tow up to 1,200 pounds.
Other
chassis features include smooth-riding MacPherson
strut front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering,
which helps to make steering light and accurate.
Braking power is provided by four
hydraulically operated, self-adjusting drum brakes
that are sealed to protect from water, mud and other
debris, and 23-inch tires provide a comfortable
ride and maximum traction over a variety of surfaces.
