Polaris Outlaw
Polaris Introduces Industry’s First Sport
Quad with Independent Rear Suspension
New
for 2006, the Polaris Outlaw brings unprecedented
innovation to the sport ATV. This is the first time
a production high performance sport quad has been
built with independent rear suspension (IRS) and
the difference has surprised even Polaris.
When you witness the 499cc Outlaw race over rough
terrain, you begin to understand why independent
rear suspension is such an advantage over the standard
swing arm design. The independent suspension soaks
up the roughest terrain, keeping the rear wheels
on the ground; increasing traction and control.
“The improved handling characteristics of this
machine translate immediately to better performance,”
said Mike Dougherty, general manager of the ATV
division. “The high performance suspension translates
to greater control and to less rider fatigue, enabling
the rider to go faster more of the time.”
The Outlaw PRO (Polaris Rider Optimized) IRS
system is uniquely constructed for sport quad riding.
It delivers 10 inches of suspension travel, enabling
the Outlaw to travel easier over the roughest and
toughest terrain such as rocks, stumps and logs.
The PRO IRS design improves ground clearance to
more than twice that of straight axle sport quads.
With 9.5 inches of clearance, the rider experiences
fewer hang-ups on rutted trails, sand, and mud and
will have a distinct advantage in cross country
type riding and racing.
The Outlaw Pro IRS system was designed and engineered
with lightweight aluminum components, including
the industry’s first single link forged aluminum
upper control arm and forged aluminum lower A-arm
on a sport ATV. Outlaw comes standard with completely
rebuildable aluminum Fox Racing shocks. The piggyback
reservoir rear shocks allow preload and compression
adjustment. The PRO IRS system on Outlaw provides
additional protection to the rear brake caliper
and rear sprocket by mounting high in the rear frame
rather than close to the ground like a conventional
straight axle ATV.
The dual A-arm front suspension is similar to
its Predator counterpart, but has been redesigned
with increased recessional wheel travel. Front suspension
mount points are rotated at a more aggressive angle
to create a better approach to obstacles, absorb
rough terrain better, and improve control in inconsistent
whoops. This translates to greater control and less
feedback to the rider.
Performance is matched with a new aggressive
body style and comfortable ergonomics that fit the
sport rider. This allows riders to tuck their knees
tight against the tank for a more aggressive riding
position. The flat seat on the Outlaw allows the
rider to stay in the desired seating position without
sliding around.
Outlaw’s simpler, lighter Pro-Steering system
delivers the same benefits the proven Pro-Steering
system such as virtually zero bump steer, with fewer
parts and a cleaner design. A 1 1/8 inch diameter
steering post offers increased strength and stiffness
for the aggressive sport rider.
Outlaw features extend to the power plant and
