Sportsman 800 Twin EFI, Sportsman
700 Twin EFI and Sportsman 700 Twin
ATVs Prove Consumer Appetite for More Horsepower,
More Torque and More Fun
In
just one and two years on the market respectively,
the all-new Sportsman 800 Twin EFI and Sportsman
700 Twin EFI have established a big bore dominance
in recreation and utility ATVs. The Sportsman 700
Twin Carb continues alongside the two EFIs, to give
riders the choices they want in big bore ATVs.
These premium Sportsman models appeal to riders
who want the maximum performance and best ride,
in the toughest all-wheel drive ATV. Riders put
the product to work in extreme conditions and all
types of terrain, serving a wide range of roles
including transport, towing, hauling, high-altitude
riding and running down the trail.
The 800 Twin EFI has a liquid-cooled, even-firing
Polaris Liberty™ parallel-twin engine. Next in line
is the 700 Twin EFI, also a liquid-cooled, even-firing
Liberty™ parallel-twin engine.
The Sportsman 800 Twin EFI and Sportsman 700
Twin EFI pair these engines with a Bosch® multi-port
semi-sequential injection system and Polaris PVT
transmission to give riders the full benefit of
the power plant. This combination of power, EFI
and PVT transmission, has established unbeatable
performance in the big bore AWD class.
The electronic fuel injection system (EFI) system
makes these Polaris Sportsman models uniquely suited
for tough terrain and high altitude riding. In particular,
the EFI system ensures response and reliability
in the type of rugged, off-road terrain that demands
sudden and extreme changes in power and variations
in speed.
It is the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) within
the EFI system that delivers precise response from
the engine. This also makes the machine more driveable
at slow speeds.
The EFI system also compensates automatically
for changes in altitude and temperature, ensuring
the Sportsman 800 and 700 Twin EFIs start readily
in all conditions from –25 degrees F to 120 degrees
F and operate smoothly in altitudes up to 10,000
feet.
The
Polaris Variable Transmission (PVT) enables the
engine to deliver the industry’s best performance
for extreme conditions, towing, hauling, payload
and top speed. The PVT continually senses engine
speed and vehicle torque load and provides the proper
amount of power to the drive wheels. This PVT is
the industry’s best-selling automatic transmission
with more than 1.5 million sold and uses a durable
belt backed by a Polaris lifetime limited warranty.
The engine delivers outstanding performance using
87-octane fuel and all connections throughout the
fuel system are sealed and water resistant. Because
the keyed ignition turns the electronic fuel pump
on and off, there is no need for a fuel shut-off
switch found on other ATV models.
The Sportsman 800 Twin EFI, Sportsman 700 Twin
EFI and Sportsman 700 Twin match best-in-class power
with traction, ride and handling only available
through Polaris Sportsman premium components. Among
the features consumers have found most compelling
in these models are:
- Polaris’ On-Demand All-Wheel Drive delivers
traction only achieved with true all-wheel drive.
When the rear wheels lose traction, the Polaris
AWD system automatically engages both front
wheels to provide full torque to all four wheels.
Power is delivered to all four wheels via 4-wheel
independent shaft drive. This produces a performance
vastly different from competitive 3 1/2 wheel
drive limited slip systems. The Polaris AWD
system automatically reverts to 2WD when AWD
is no longer needed.
- A wider front wheel stance and an improved
MacPherson strut front suspension create an
industry leading 8.2 inches suspension travel.
This provides a smoother ride and better handling
as the front tires maintain more consistent
contact with the ground.
- Polaris’ long-travel Independent Rear Suspension
(IRS) with an anti-roll bar gives this fully-independent,
progressive-rate rear suspension delivers a
smoother ride, 9.5 inches of travel and 11.25
inches of ground clearance. Together with the
improved in 2005 front suspension and wider
front wheel stance, the IRS delivers enhanced
handling, tracking and stability.
- Double Offset joint (DOJ) half-shafts reduce
vibration and improve the ride when the Sportsman
is accelerating, decelerating, running uphill
or maneuvering in AWD.
- Tough bodywork with better splash protection
and easy access to several maintenance and adjustment
points. The front bumper is a tough composite
material while the wider floorboards are practically
unbreakable and offer better splash protection.
- In front there is an integrated, composite
storage box. The storage box lid has numerous
tie-down points and can be lifted for access
to the storage box even when gear is strapped
to it.
- In back, a tough composite rear rack accepts
Pure Polaris Lock & Ride™ accessory mounts.
These mounts use expansion anchor technology
that allows a rider to attach accessories in
seconds. The rack has numerous tie-down points
and under the rear rack is an easy-access 10x10
inch storage box and a 1.25 inch standard receiver
hitch.
- 26 inch PXT radial tires are extremely tough
and puncture-resistant. Designed by Carlisle
exclusively for Polaris, these 3-Star tires
deliver a better ride than bias ply tires and
have an aggressive, high-traction tread pattern.
- Lighting on the Sportsman was dramatically
improved in 2005 and the Sportsman 800 Twin
EFI and Sportsman 700 Twin EFI benefit from
the new look and functionality. Up front, the
high-beam headlights include reflector lens
optics that cast a wider beam. The two bumper-mounted
low-beam lights are reflector lens increase
brightness and deliver 37 watts each.
- Twin work lights in the rear are an industry
first and are controlled by an On/Off switch
on the headlight pod.
- Twin brake light/tail lights are standard.
- Polaris’ single-lever all-wheel hydraulic
disc brakes with stainless steel braided lines
and an auxiliary hydraulic rear foot brake.
- Polaris’ EBS (Engine Braking System) assists
in braking in downhill travel.
- The drum-shift provides a simple inline
shift pattern that helps make plowing easier
and allows riders to shift easily among High,
Low, Neutral and Reverse. The transmission also
has a Park position.
- VDO instrumentation keeps riders aware of
the vehicle’s operating status. There is an
electronic fuel gauge with a low-fuel flasher
and data concerning speed, engine RPM, maintenance
indicators and a gear position indicator.
