When introduced for 2006, the QuadRacer LT-R450 changed the world of ATV racing. Finally, after struggling through years of expensive and time-consuming modifications, ATV racers at all levels were able to buy – at authorized Suzuki retailers – a race-ready ATV that required little race prep. The QuadRacer LT-R450 was designed with the same spirit of high-performance craftsmanship that Suzuki engineers have infused into products like the inimitable GSX-R sportbikes.

This innovative machine’s success was proven on ATV motocross tracks nationwide throughout 2006. But none more so than with the championship racing efforts of Doug Gust, crowned the 2006 Champion of the WPSA Super Quad 450 Pro MX Division. Gust and the Team Suzuki Yoshimura race team pulled off the title-winning effort during the quad’s inaugural season, while at the same time finishing second overall in the ATVA Pro MX series. An important force in the development of the QuadRacer LT-R450, Gust helped prove that the QuadRacer is ready to win at the highest level.

Proving the quad’s mettle at the consumer level are awards from the industry’s most noted examiners – the ATV media. The QuadRacer won titles in those battles, too, earning “ATV of the Year” awards from ATV Sport magazine, ATV Rider magazine, ATV Pathfinder.com, and The ATV Guide.

Engine
Motivation for the QuadRacer 450 is derived from Ricky Carmichael’s Motocross Championship-winning RM-Z450 motocross machine. The RM-Z450-based engine for the QuadRacer 450 was designed to be compact and durable, to have an awesome spread of power, and maximum durability. The 450cc liquidcooled, DOHC engine features a lightweight Suzuki advanced fuel-injection system with a 42mm throttle body, multi-hole type injectors with injection volume based on engine rpm, intake air pressure and throttle opening in degrees all controlled by a high-spec 16-bit ECM.

The LT-R450 cylinder head utilizes a narrow valve angle with a 13-degree intake valve angle and a 13-degree exhaust valve angle for an included valve angle of 26 degrees. This narrow valve angle allows for a compact combustion chamber and a high compression ratio of 12.0:1. Lightweight and durable titanium valves are used for maximum performance with an intake measurement of 36mm and an exhaust measurement of 29mm.

Lightweight, hollow camshafts are precisely machined from forged steel billets and feature a sulphonitriding process for reduced friction and wear. Pistons are forged aluminum with cutaway sides and oil retaining grooves and a new three-ring piston ring system for maximum durability. Cylinders utilize Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material (SCEM) coating for less weight and improved heat transfer while the clutch cover, magneto cover and cylinder cover are all made of magnesium for maximum strength and minimal weight.

Lubrication for the QuadRacer 450 was built with lessons learned from the Championship-winning RM-Z450. The dry sump system divides the crankcase into two internal compartments creating a lower center of gravity and shorter overall engine height for improved handling. One compartment houses the crankshaft, which is allowed to spin freely and allows for a lower crankshaft position, while a separate transmission compartment that acts as wet sump for engine oil. The LT-R450 engine differs from the RM-Z450 in that it uses three oil pumps: one is a feed pump for the crankcase from the oil tank, the second is a scavenging pump which scavenges oil to the oil tank and the third is feed pump for the transmission. All three pumps are located inline and moved by an oil pump driven gear. This system is more compact, has improved durability and provides better shift feel for the QuadRacer 450.

The QuadRacer’s five-speed transmission is exceptionally compact with the larger 1st and 2nd gears located on the outside and the smaller 3rd, 4th and 5th gears located inboard to keep the transmission very compact. This narrow transmission also allows the clutch to be positioned close to the centerline for optimum mass centralization and improved handling performance.

The center-mounted stainless-steel exhaust system is designed for maximum performance, and the central muffler placement improves stability and optimum handling performance through the corners.

Chassis
The chassis for the QuadRacer 450 was designed with the racetrack in mind and features superb handling and awesome stability, maximum durability and innovative new technology for the ultimate racing ATV chassis. Low and wide were the main goals when designing the chassis and the LT-R450 does not disappoint. The frame features a high-tensile-steel construction with a compact, lower profile and a lower center of gravity for unbelievable handling performance. The QuadRacer also features a unique steel rear swingarm for higher durability and increased flexibility for the racetrack.

Front suspension is an independent double-wishbone system with long wheel travel while still keeping the low center of gravity. The ultra-wide A-arm features steel round tube construction on both upper and lower A-arms with a forged-aluminum knuckle for maximum strength. Front suspension features Kayaba piggyback reservoir-style shock absorbers with a massive 40mm piston, a 14mm shock rod, and three-way adjustability for a race-ready front suspension. Out back, a Kayaba piggyback reservoir rear shock boasting a 50mm piston and 18mm rod provide incredible damping and durability with adjustable preload, rebound and both high-speed and low-speed compression adjustments.

Wheels also follow closely with the low and wide theme of the QuadSport R450. Front wheels are 10 x 5.5 inches shod with Dunlop radial tires designed specifically for the LT-R450. Those special Dunlop tires are also mounted at the rear on 8 x 8.0 pressed-aluminum-alloy wheels. The combination of both sets of pressed-aluminum wheels and special Dunlop tires create an aggressive and low-handling package for maximum performance that the QuadRacer 450 racer demands.

Dual hydraulic front disc brakes provide maximum stopping power featuring dual-piston calipers, 160mm front brake rotors and resin brake hoses for improved lever feel. Rear brakes consist of an 190mm rear disc combined with a single-piston caliper and a forged-aluminum rear brake mount with a parking brake as well.

Footpegs feature a rugged, serrated design for maximum foot grip with a wider 46mm width, a lightweight aluminum mud guard brace and a forged-aluminum brake pedal. Chassis protection comes in the form of a sturdy front bumper and a durable, high-impact skid plate that resists denting, bending and corrosion while still sliding easily over rocks and roots.

Styling
An aggressive machine like the QuadRacer 450 demands a radical look to complement the amazing performance. From the sharply styled fenders, to the T-shaped seat the LT-R450 has a race ready look fresh for the motocross track. Front and rear fenders are designed to be lightweight and accentuate the sharpness of the overall styling of this racing machine. A newly designed, multi-reflector headlight reflects the high-performance heritage of Suzuki sportbikes like the GSX-R and Hayabusa. This unique headlight is easily removable with a single bolt making it racetrack ready in a matter of seconds. Further enhancing the sharp look are aggressively styled radiator shrouds that also help improve cooling of the machine at racing speeds.

The T-shaped seat, when combined with a seamless surface from the fuel tank covers and side panels provide maximum rider mobility and improved rider control. Finishing things off is a maintenance- free LED taillight that boasts minimal weight, compact design, low electric consumption and maximum durability while still providing a sporty look when combined with the new center-mount muffler.
